What 162-0’s Two 99 OVR Seasons Reveal

There are 19,807 cards in 162-0, covering 8,758 player IDs and seasons from 1876 through 2025. Only two cards reach the game’s 99 OVR ceiling: Josh Gibson’s 1943 season with the Homestead Grays and Barry Bonds’ 2001 season with San Francisco.

What 99 means here: OVR is a rating designed for this drafting game. It is not an official MLB statistic, a verdict on the best season ever, or a claim that two unlike seasons can be ranked with perfect precision.

Josh Gibson, 1943: a record book changed

Gibson’s 1943 card is a catcher season with a .466 batting average, .564 on-base percentage and .871 slugging percentage in the data used by the game. Those numbers are not a historical footnote. When MLB integrated available Negro Leagues statistics into its official record in 2024, the 1943 average became the recognized single-season Major League record. MLB now also recognizes Gibson as the career leader in batting average, slugging and OPS. His 1937 season, not Bonds’ 2001 or 2004, holds the official single-season slugging and OPS records.

That correction matters whenever baseball writing uses words such as “highest” or “last.” Negro Leagues seasons belong in the Major League record. The available record is still being researched, and MLB has said future discoveries may change leaderboards again. The honest approach is to name the record being discussed and the source behind it, not quietly fall back to the old American League and National League-only frame.

Barry Bonds, 2001: a different kind of extreme

Bonds’ 2001 card carries the familiar 73 home runs, a .515 on-base percentage and an .863 slugging percentage. The 73 homers remain the MLB single-season record. But it is no longer correct to call .863 the highest single-season slugging percentage in Major League history. MLB’s integrated record places four Negro Leagues marks above it, led by Gibson’s .974 in 1937. Likewise, Gibson’s 1937 and 1943 OPS figures stand above Bonds’ 2004 mark. Bonds still owns the official single-season on-base percentage record, .609 in 2004.

Why, then, is the 2001 card a 99? The answer comes from the game’s data model, not an official leaderboard. The site calculates a simplified hitter index from season OBP and slugging relative to that season’s league, with a park-factor adjustment. It then pulls the result toward 100 according to plate appearances and maps it through a logarithmic OVR curve. Bonds’ large workload and extraordinary relative production survive that regression.

Ted Williams, stated accurately

Ted Williams hit .406 for Boston in 1941. He remains the most recent qualified American League or National League hitter to finish above .400. He should not be called the last Major Leaguer to do it: Gibson hit .466 in the recognized 1943 Negro National League season. Williams’ career .482 on-base percentage remains the official MLB career record. Those narrower, precise statements are stronger than repeating a superlative the record integration made obsolete.

Babe Ruth and relative dominance

Ruth’s place here is not rescued or diminished by a single ranking. The Hall of Fame documents how his 1921 season reset records in home runs, runs, RBI, walks, extra-base hits and total bases. His seasons still score exceptionally in 162-0 because his production towered over his league context. That is exactly the question a league-relative measure is equipped to ask: how far did a player stand above the environment around him?

How two seasons reach the ceiling

The two cards arrive at 99 by different routes. The game’s unregressed hitter index is 289 for Gibson and 278 for Bonds. Gibson’s card has 305 plate appearances; Bonds’ has 664. The hitter regression multiplier is PA / (PA + 60), so Gibson’s shorter documented league schedule receives a larger pull toward 100. After regression, the stored simulation indexes are 258 for Gibson and 263 for Bonds. Both then round to 99 under the same OVR curve.

That result is useful inside a game: it keeps a short season from automatically overwhelming the scale while preserving truly exceptional seasons. It is not a correction to Gibson’s official records, and it is not a historical forecast. It is a transparent choice about card balance.
